Nothing ruins your day faster than a slow or completely clogged drain. Whether it’s your kitchen sink, bathroom shower, or bathtub, clogs are incredibly common in Melbourne, FL homes due to hard water, beach sand, sunscreen, hair, grease, and Florida’s high humidity.

Most people will instantly grab harsh chemical cleaners or de-cloggers, but these can be very damaging to your plumbing. Older PVC or metallic pipes are especially susceptible to damage from strong cleaners.

As we have discussed in previous blogs, there are more natural ways to approach a clog before going for the super heavy-duty cleaners. For example, you can boil a pot of water and put a large squirt of dish soap in it. Then, pour this mixture down the clogged drain. Let the heat and soap work its magic but be careful not to burn yourself with the hot water.

For sink drains, the old vinegar and baking soda trick will be successful about half the time and do zero damage to your pipes.

Baking Soda + Vinegar Method

A classic natural solution that creates a fizzy reaction to loosen debris.

Steps:

  • Pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain
  • Immediately pour 1 cup white vinegar down the drain
  • Cover with a plug or wet cloth and let it sit for 10–15 minutes
  • Flush with a full kettle of boiling water

You can repeat this method a few times to see if it works for you. It is low effort and cheap to try.

Plunger

A plunger can be found in pretty much every household. People always have one on hand in case there is a toilet clog. But you can use your plumber on any drain where there is a complete blockage.

Make sure to fill up the sink, tub or shower so that there is a pool of sitting water. Put the plunger squarely over the drain like you would in your toilet. Make sure there is a proper seal. Then you can plunge away. Sometimes your clog just needs a little shove to get moving.

Don’t forget that a good drain snake can be purchased for 20 or 30 dollars. These will come in handy multiple times in your life.

Carefully work the drain snake down into the pipe and twist and turn it. These snakes are an excellent way to remove a stubborn clog. They pose little risk of doing permanent damage to your drain or pipes.

Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum

A powerful but lesser-known method:

  • Set your shop vac to liquid mode
  • Create a tight seal over the drain
  • The suction can pull out clogs that plunging can’t reach

If these methods fail, then you should call a professional plumber in your area. He can usually have your problem fixed within an hour and be on his way. Your local licensed plumber has seen just about every type of clog there is.
