Brevard Beaches plumbing tips for summer

As a local plumber serving Melbourne, Indialantic, Satellite Beach, and surrounding Brevard County areas, we see these issues spike every summer. Just living in Florida has many benefits. But the environment presents its very own plumbing challenges as well.

The #1 Summer Culprit: Beach Sand in Your Drains

We all know about that beach life. You spend the afternoon at the beach where soak up the sun and enjoy the water. You dust off your stuff the best you can when you leave but inevitably track in a bunch of sand into your home.

It’s not just beach sand either. If you run or hike local trails, then you track in sand with you too. The area all used to be under the ocean water and is basically one huge former beach.

Our natural inclination in to get into the shower and rinse off. Unfortunately, the nature of sand doesn’t want to be washed away so easily. It lands in your drain and piles up in the bottom. As a result, your water drains more slowly than ever before.

Here are some quick tips to prevent sand from entering your drains.

  • Rinse off outside before entering. Install a simple outdoor shower or hose bib near the home’s entrance so family members can wash sand off feet and gear.
  • Remove shoes and shake out towels outside.
  • Use drain screens or hair catchers in every shower and bathtub — empty them regularly.
  • Avoid running heavily sandy laundry loads without pre-rinsing items outside.

Sunscreen, Oils & Stubborn Soap Scum Buildup

Sunscreen, body oils, and lotions rinse off in the shower and mix with sand and hair to form a sticky, glue-like residue. Melbourne’s hard water (very common in Brevard County) makes this buildup even worse by adding mineral scale.

What to do:

  • Choose “reef-safe” or mineral-based sunscreens when possible — they’re often less oily.
  • Wipe excess lotion or oil off with a dry towel before showering.
  • Run hot water for 30–60 seconds after showering to help flush residue.
  • Consider a water softener if you haven’t already. It dramatically reduces scale and makes cleaning easier.

High Summer Water Usage Strains Your System

The days are longer, they are hotter and more people will be in and out of your home. The end result is a much higher use of water than in winter months. This increases the chance of clogs, leaks, and even water heater strain.

Smart summer habits:

  • Space out long showers and laundry loads.
  • Check outdoor faucets, hoses, and irrigation systems for leaks — summer heat and pressure make small drips worse.
  • Inspect your water heater for unusual noises or rusty water, especially if it’s older.
