Plumbing clog - avoid these items

In the past we have written about items which should not be flushed down your toilet in order to prevent a clog. We mentioned items like paper towels, baby wipes and even skin care wipes. In this article we want to list some of the other items which should not be flushed.

Your toilet is a picky device in that it wants only organic matter or matter which can be broken down easily. This is why toilet paper is so thin and flimsy. If it were any tougher it would cause clogs all of the time. The fact remains that anything tougher than toilet paper can give you a hard time. And by hard time we mean serious clogs.

Types of Clogs

You have the type of clog where material is jammed in the immediate space between your  toilet and the sewer line. These type of blocks can often be unblocked with your standard plunger.

But you also have the type of blockage which can occur farther down the line. These may require a plumbing snake or more serious measures.

It is ideal to avoid blockages altogether. Below are some of the items you may be flushing without realizing they are not safe for your toilet:

  • Q-tips
  • cotton pads or cotton balls
  • condoms
  • diapers
  • dental floss
  • medicated pads
  • sanitary napkins
  • cigarette butts

Yes it is true that some of you may have flushed these items with not problem. But its only a matter of time before they cause a problem. Its best to just throw these items in the waste basket and be done with it.

When it comes to an item being flushed down your toilet you should think the following :”If there is any doubt there is no doubt”. Throw it away and stave off clogs to another day.
