Dual flush toilet

Average U.S. household water bills hit $70 monthly in 2025. As the price of having potable water delivered into your home or business increases it becomes very apparent that every drop counts. The good news? Simple plumbing upgrades can slash your water usage by up to 30% without sacrificing comfort.

Here is a short list of some upgrades you can have done (or do yourself) to improve efficiency and save money on your water bill.

Install Low-Flow Showerheads and Faucets

Showers and faucets account for the majority of your water use. In fact, that number is almost 70%. Low flow showers and faucets are engineered to give you comparable water pressure while conserving the amount of water you actually use.

These fixtures use up to 50% less water than older models. They cost as little as $25-$50 and will save you up to $100 annually. Newer model faucets even have “pause buttons” which allow you to quickly turn on and off water flow while shaving or brushing your teeth.

Dual-Flush or Low-Flow Toilets

These toilets come equipped with an option to flush smaller amounts of water or larger amounts if the situation calls for it. They cost about $200-$500 but can save 4,000-13,000 gallons yearly per toilet, or $40-130 on bills.

Again, this is another one of those options that literally pays for itself overtime and then becomes a net money/water saver.

Tankless Water Heaters

We’ve mentioned tankless water heaters in previous posts. Essentially, this is water heated “as needed” or on-the-go. It doesn’t heat water for it to just sit there waiting to be used. Instead, it heats water as it is demanded using quick-heating technology.

By installing and using one of these water heaters you can reduce water heating costs by 8-50%, or $100-200 yearly on combined water/energy bills.

These heaters usually cost between $500-$1,000 but there are also rebates available for a lot of them.

Insulate Your Hot Water Pipes

When a pipe is exposed, it loses heat very rapidly. This can cost more money to as it causes your water heater to work overtime. By insulating exposed pipes, you don’t lose heat energy to the environment.

This is a fix which could cost you as little as $30 and save you $20-$50 per year in electricity savings. When installing insulation, focus on the first 10 feet from the heater. Also, check for rebates from local utilities.
