Clogged Drains from Beach Sand: A Common Headache for Melbourne Coastal Homes

The beach. Ahhh.. the beach. One of the benefits of living here on the Space Coast is our access to the local beaches. It’s great spending an afternoon there to relax, unwind and get some of that nourishing vitamin D. But we all know how pesky that beach sand can be when we get home. You rinse off in the shower, and all that sand goes into your drain. And it does cause problems with plumbing.

When we clear a clog there will often be sand in there. It has a habit of not being easily washed away and can cause (or at least ad to) drain stoppages. It settles in traps, pipes, and low points, building up over time and restricting flow—leading to backups, slow drains, and even costly pipe damage if ignored.

Our local beaches have that signature soft, fine silica sand—perfect for barefoot walks but terrible for plumbing. This is an issue we face year-round but there is always a significant uptick in summer months.

Signs Your Drains Are Suffering from Sand Buildup

  • Water drains slowly in the shower or tub (especially after beach days).
  • Gurgling sounds from sinks or toilets. Water pooling around your feet in the shower.
  • Unpleasant odors from drains (trapped debris rotting).
  • Multiple fixtures affected at once— a clue it’s in the main lines, not just one trap.

If you have a clog of any kind, we are here to help. We will down into that drain and have it running as good as new. But don’t forget the old saying that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. This phrase was originally coined by none other than Benjamin Franklin way back in 1736.

What You Can do to Prevent Sand Clogs

  • Rinse off and dust off the best you can at the beach. When you get home you can even turn on the old garden hose and give a good rinse.
  • Install wire mesh drain covers over your drains to help catch sand and other debris that will eventually cause a clog.
  • Regarding your beach towels, make sure to shake them out well in the yard or patio or anywhere outside.
  • Perform regular maintenance of your drains by flushing them out.

A drain snake can often help dislodge the sand if you are experiencing a clog. You can also use a wet/dry van to attempt to suck the suck out of there. If those don’t work, then call the professionals. We will get things running normally for you again.
