Basic Maintenance You Can Handle Without a Florida Plumber

construction plumbing workEvery plumbing system must be maintained regularly in order for it to function properly. If you aren’t doing this maintenance yourself, you’ll need to hire someone else to do it for you, or deal with repair costs when your systems finally fail. Below are the most common tasks that you can complete yourself, and they are very easy to do.

Clean Calcium Buildups
One of the most common reasons that faucets and other fixtures start to slow down over time is because of calcium buildups. As you run water through these fixtures the minerals from that solution begin to clog up the filters over time. The best way to fix this issue is to remove the tips of your fixtures and bang out or rinse off that calcium. If you are having a difficult time removing calcium, you can also use a special cleaning solution meant to remove the deposits to speed up the process.

Clean Up Drains
Most sinks and tubs have drains built into them with baskets for catching debris. If you have noticed that water is taking longer to drain out than it once did, you’ll have to clean out these baskets to remove the hair and other items. Doing this regularly will ensure that water continues to drain down quickly and that you don’t have to rely on expert help.

Clean a P-Trap
Many sinks become clogged past the initial filter over time. This is an issue that’s a bit more difficult to solve, but still something that you can do without a plumber in Melbourne. You’ll have to be willing to take apart the section of piping directly underneath the sink where it twists up and around. There will be a fitting on either side of this twisted section, and you’ll have to loosen both of them. Do this and pull out that hooked section and rinse it out with a garden hose outdoors. You’ll be amazed at how much gunk comes out of the P-trap when you do this. That’s often all it takes to get your water flowing again.

Replace Toilet Tank Hardware
Toilets stop functioning as well as they once did over time. This is because the hardware that makes a toilet work housed in the tank itself begins to wear down. It’s important to replace all this hardware with new components when they begin to break down. Doing so will ensure that your toilet continues to flush properly and that you don’t get stuck with constantly running water and other issues that are quite easy to prevent.

If you run into issues more complex than these, or you simply don’t want to deal with your own maintenance, you should call in Florida plumbers to help you deal with common problems. They will cost more than doing the work yourself, but you’ll save time and get back to proper functioning fixtures faster and with less effort on your part.
